Here's some information for those wondering what the adoption process through BCS is, and what Mike and I will be going through in the time to come. (I swiped some of this from Shadley's blog, I hope you don't mind - the info was great!)
1. Family completes formal application, home study, and works on Dossier
2. Family sends completed Dossier to Ethiopia where it goes through some steps
3. Family waits for referral of their child from Ethiopia
4. Referral is given (Child's name, picture, and information)
5. Family files official acceptance papers
6. Court date is assigned in Ethiopia (Family will be represented by BCS liaison)
7. Court date in Ethiopia (Sometimes more than one is needed)
8. If court is passed, the child is officially the family's!!
9. Embassy date is assigned (Parents must be present for Embassy date)
10. Travel to Ethiopia for Embassy date and bring home child!
Right now, we're not really even on step #1. We have a few things to work on, such as gather some documents (birth and marriage certificates, passport, etc) and work on a huge family assessment worksheet - as well as the 8-hour online class that we need to take. Probably closer towards the end of this year, we'll start the formal application and Dossier. (It's really hard for me to be patient and wait!!)
What is a Dossier, you might be asking? The official definition is "A file containing detailed records on a particular person or subject." Basically, it's all of your home study information, and family assessment from your social worker to be sent to the country you're adopting from for them to review.
