Vacation Day #10

Last night was great! We put Maddie's crib between the two beds, and all watched The Wizard Of Oz while falling asleep. Jackson and I fell asleep during the movie, and Mike and Maddie fell asleep after the movie was over. No crying all night long!! Although, Mike's work called (again!!) in the middle of the night.

When we woke up (6:00am!!) we got ready, packed our bags, and had breakfast. Maddie made friends with the girls at the next table because they were having bananas. I asked Maddie if she liked the movie last night, and she said "The Boz!!" Close enough. The luggage cart is packed, we are ready to go. The taxi is coming to pick us up at 8:30am in the hotel lobby. And...Maddie just threw her bowl of fruit loops all over the floor. Signing out for now...

The Trip Home:

The guy that picked us up at the hotel had a "Mike Weld" sign taped to the side of his van, it was hilarious - probably because we're all tired and pretty much anything is funny.

The plane back to KC was okay, besides half the trip Jackson throwing a fit and crying on the plane. Maddie fell asleep in the airport waiting to board, after a melt-down at the Burger King getting something to drink. (Are we home yet??)

The kids were glad that we got hot chocolate chip cookies on the flight from Orlando to KC.

On the way back, we saw a zooming truck with a dog in the back that kept sticking its head over the edge of the truck. I was just waiting for the second that the truck hit a bump and the dog went flying! So we decided to pass them so we didn't get in an accident.

The kids both slept most of the way home from KC to DSM which was nice. However, now that we're home, they're not wanting to go to bed. And we had a great "Welcome Home" gift for us - two giant pieces of our fence blew over and are laying in our yard. Again. I wish our house would stop breaking so we can start saving money instead of spending! We made Piggy-Wiggies for dinner, which Jackson absolutely loved! Now it's time for bed. Wshew!!

Anyway, it's good to be home! MMRRRREEOOOOW! (That's the sound Sabrina keeps making 24/7)

Vacation Day #9

Maddie slept in the "bathroom" again last night, with a giant pillow fort built up to keep her from looking at us while she was trying to fall asleep. If she even thinks someone else is remotely close, she'll stand up and scream.

This morning we ate the leftover food that we had in the fridge before packing our stuff up, which partly included a box of super fiber cereal that Mike got thinking it was Life. Which actually explains a lot of problems we've been having....*ahem* After jam packing the banana car up, it was off to drop all of our luggage off at the hotel. Luckily, they let us keep our bags there until we could check in later today. So we drop our bags off and Mike asks the girl at the front desk what number to call for a return shuttle from the airport to the hotel, since the entire reason we are staying at this hotel was because of the free airport shuttle. Just call the hotel number, she says. Easy enough!

Off to Dis-Advantage Car Rental to drop off the car off. I felt horrible seeing all of the people waiting in line inside and pouring outside, remembering what it was like for us when we first got there. It was surprisingly easy dropping the car off though since we only had the diaper bag and carseats with us, and all the luggage was already at the hotel. Since there's a free airport shuttle from our hotel, we thought the best idea would be to catch the Advantage shuttle to the airport, and the Hotel shuttle from the airport to the hotel. So we hop on Advantage's shuttle, and off to the airport! Maddie finally falls asleep, which is sweet sweet silence! Once at the airport, Mike calls the hotel number to say we're ready to be picked up. "We don't have an airport shuttle from the airport to here. Just take one there, which is approx $17/person." Umm, didn't we just talk to you and you said that you did have one?? Absolutely ridiculous to pay $80 for a 10 minute ride. So we decide the best thing to do is take a taxi. Which the driver gave Mike attitude because he wanted to use a credit card instead of cash. He also drove with the windows down, giving my hair a nice jumbo poof!!!

Once back at the hotel, the front desk says that they don't have an airport shuttle at ALL. The entire reason we're staying at this hotel was because of the restaurant on-site and the airport shuttle - neither of which they actually have! So we have another taxi coming for us in the morning to get back to the airport.

Once we get up to the room, Mike and Jackson go swimming while Maddie and I take it easy in the room. We ordered pizza for dinner, and hot wings that were HOT. But even though they made me cry, I kept having another. After baths and jammies for the kids, I asked Mike to help me move the bed out a little bit so I could reach the plug-in for the kids' DVD player to watch a movie while falling asleep. CRASH!!! I look up, and he tried to move the bed by the headboard. Which....is attached to the wall. But not any longer! After some laughing, I helped him get it back up and reminded him that most hotels work that way. I'm glad I didn't ask him to help me open the window!! *Kick kick smash!!*

My vacation blogs are losing their wittiness, we are all exhausted and ready to go home. My mom just called and said tornados went through Slater (where they live, about 15 minutes from us) and the weather is really bad and flooding again. So I hope the house is okay when we get home!! I feel like a 5 year old kid, wanting to get home. Are we there yet? Are we there yet? Are we there yet??

Moment Of Insanity: Mike actually mentioned to me today the "next time we come to Orlando." Ummm, next time? I can't wait to get done with THIS time! I'm all vacationed out. Next vacation, Ethiopia!

Vacation Day #8

Maddie slept in the kitchen last night, which proved to be a good idea! She only woke up twice screaming, but quickly fell back asleep. Today was a grumpy day; Mike wanted to stay back at the resort, but I wanted to utilize our last day with the rental car and go back to the beach. So after some good times, we finally decided to head back to the beach for a while. Jackson got to use his inflatable whale beach toy and had a good time.

Maddie was playing in the sand digging a ditch, when I think “Oh, cute photo op!” So as I bend over to take the picture, SPLASH!! A wave kicks me in the rear and knocks me down, and water covers Maddie’s head. Needless to say, she screamed the entire time after that. However when looking back at my pictures, I surprisingly have the moment of impact caught in my photos! Good timing. Meanwhile, Mike is happily reading his book a few feet up the beach and doesn’t notice that his daughter and wife almost get swept into Davey Jone’s Locker.

On the way back to the resort, Jackson wet his pants in the car (which he did last time we came home from the beach too). After we got back, I started packing stuff up in our suitcases while we did laundry, and Mike took Jackson down to play mini-golf for a while….where Jackson made a poopie in his pants. This vacation can be summed up in one sentence… “It was the best of times, it was the worst of times.” Check please!! I’m ready to go home.

Vacation Day #7

Last night was pretty good, there was only one time Maddie woke up screaming. Although, someone Mike works with called again in the middle of the night waking us up. Grrrr! We woke up at 6:00am to get ready for our big day at Disney World. We got sunblocked up and off to the park! We drove to the gigantic parking lot, rode the shuttle, and then got on the ferry to the Magic Kingdom. We did Mike’s touring plan for small kids that he found in a Disney World book. And I have to mention, it was awesome that our rental car looked like a giant banana boat, because that made it so much easier finding it in the parking lot after we were done and ready to go home!! We stayed at the park until around 2:00, when we were so exhausted and hot we needed a break. So we all went back to the resort - Maddie and I stayed, while Mike took Jackson back to have some extra time there with him to ride the rides we couldn't while Maddie was along.

We rode "Snow White's Scary Adventure" - I rode first with Jackson, then the boys rode it later on while the girls went back to the hotel. Although our kids didn't find it scary, I can easily see why there are so many complaints about the rides with people bringing their small children onto the ride, and them being afraid of the witch that jumps out, etc.

The ride "It's A Small World" is enough to make you want to scratch at your eyes and ears. I think the only person that thought it was a good time was Maddie; which was about the only good time she's had on this trip.

Vacation Day #6

Happy Birthday Jackson!!

Last night’s covert operation was a success!! Maddie successfully slept from 9:00pm until 8:30am, along with everyone else! After getting up and ready, we took off for a day at Cocoa Beach. Jackson had a fantastic “Beach Birthday” in the sun. We laid our towels down, got out all our beach toys, ran for the water, and…Maddie started screaming. Apparently she hates fun in the sun. After some coaxing, she would finally stand in the sand as long as it was very far away from the water. Most of the pictures I took were of Maddie screaming, or of her back as she looked at the fun from afar. She ended up sitting on her towel while everyone got in the water and looked for seashells, until we realized that she was scooping sand in her shovel and eating it. Delicious! I also realized something else; it is a horrible mistake (although extremely exfoliating!) to wait until the kids are already on the beach and sandy to put on sunblock. It hurt my skin rubbing the sunblock on with sand stuck to my skin. Then we just looked like The Sandman, and all sticky. I also never realized how hard it is to get sand off your body and clothes before getting back in the car! Good thing it’s a rental!!

Back to the resort! We got back around 4:30pm and made the kids a quick dinner before Mike took Jackson to the car painting event at the resort. Meanwhile, Maddie and I stayed back in the room while I set up Jackson’s birthday present and cake. Crash! Maddie grabs one of the plates off the table and whips it onto the floor, smashing it into a kajillion pieces. After sweeping that up, the boys get back to the room and we all have cake. Hello chocolate fudge!!

Then we all played Jackson’s new Operation game that he really wanted, which is a lot different than the old version of it. It’s lots of fun, and easier for smaller kids to play. In the meantime, Maddie’s watching “The Bee Movie” from her crib – until I look over and see her standing outside of her crib holding the mini DVD player. Bwuh?? Yes, that’s right. Maddie’s figured out how to escape from her crib prison by throwing a leg over the top and pulling herself out. Tonight’s going to be fun!!

Vacation Day #5

It is now approximately 2:00am. Maddie has been screaming uncontrollably since she woke up around 9:30pm last night – and not the “oh, something could possibly be wrong with me” kind of cry. It is the kind of cry that makes you want to call a Catholic priest for a STAT exorcism. I thought I would never say this statement again after the many horrible trips we took when Jackson was Maddie’s age and numerous phone calls to my mom with me crying my eyes out not knowing what to do with Jackson’s screaming – but tonight, truly and honestly, is the worst night I’ve ever had in my life. Amongst the neighbors from all sides of us banging on the walls to quiet her up, Mike has resorted to sleeping on the "bathroom" floor next to Maddie’s crib while I sit here sobbing into the sheets. At least this is the lowest point we can be at, it can only get better from here. Boy was I wrong….

Video: The Room, Fudgebars, Pillow Forts, & More

3:45am, and the phone rings. All I can think is “shush, I’m going to have to hurt anyone that wakes up Maddie!” It was Mike’s work asking a question about something going on, until he finally said he was on vacation. Wshew! At least the kids are still asleep.

We wake up at 6:00am to get ready for our “no pressure” Resort Tour and to claim our two free Disney World tickets. When I checked earlier, they said there was daycare for kids two and over but since Maddie was close enough to two she would be able to go too. What a relief for us! When we get there, we’re asked to sign in and drop Jackson off at the daycare before we go on our tour. Umm, just Jackson? Oh yah, of course a change in plans, they now only accept children than are 3 and over and potty trained. So Jackson goes straight for their video games, and Maddie screamed to stay and play with all the cool toys but according to their rules we had to drag her kicking and screaming with us. Apparently they think adults are more likely to pay attention and buy things when they have a kicking and screaming 2 year old in tow!

The guy that did our tour, Jorge, was super nice. He told us how he and his wife had earlier had a premature baby that died when it was a couple months old, how they were getting ready to start a family again, and thinking about the possibility of adopting. He also said he used to be a youth pastor. Although he knew we were probably not going to buy a time share, he was still very nice and pleasant to talk with – even with Maddie screaming the entire time. And no, I don’t mean the typical almost-two-year-old whines and fusses. I’m talking about full-out kicking, screaming, and monster-like behavior. A few minutes into our conversation with Jorge, we were asked to leave by his supervisor Mike (Not to be confused with my wonderful Mikey) and go outside onto a porch area to “be more comfortable” with Maddie and to finish our presentation there. She was still way more than a handful and I was counting the seconds until we could leave and just get out of there. Yet there was more. I know Jorge was just doing his job, but the moment he brought his supervisor Mike over to our table for the end of his presentation is the moment fire began rolling out of my ears in fury.

Mike: So which time share am I going to be selling you today?
Mikey: I don’t think we are interested in purchasing one (and gave reasons)
Mike: But if you vacation, you’re wasting money if you don’t get one.
Mikey: We don’t vacation often.
Mike: What do you call this? A vacation?! If you don’t vacation, why are you here? You don't make any sense.
*Fury and anger rising in my blood*
Mikey: We purchased this vacation package very cheaply online, and paid for it before we had some other financial situations come up (Is that REALLY any of his business in the first place?), we don’t do a lot of traveling, and it’s extremely stressful to travel with small children.
Mike: Do you plan on going on a vacation in the next 20 years? You're telling me you don't plan on taking a vacation in 20 years??
Mikey: Yah, we probably will.
Mike: So you’re just waiting until the price goes up? Good planning!! Way to make good financial decisions!
*Maddie’s still screaming her head off, and I’m literally fighting back tears. I just want to go home!*
Jill: I don’t even want to finish THIS vacation, muchless start planning our NEXT vacation!!

I don’t even remember the rest of the conversation, it was a mix of fury and tears. We said goodbye to Jorge, and Mike just grabbed his little notebook and walked away in a huff. So now we’re done, we can get our Disney tickets and get out of there! Wrong! We need to sit at the table and wait for yet another person to come over and talk to us about how we felt the presentation went. We tell him that we thought Jorge was a great guy, but the guy Mike was the absolute biggest jerk I have ever met in my life. “I don’t know why, but this is the third complaint I’ve had about him today…” Third complaint today? It’s only 8:30am! So he finally gives us our paper to take to the desk to pick up our tickets, we get Jackson, and get out of there as fast as we can!

After a little bit of cooling down, we head over to Gatorland. It was awesome!! Alligators everywhere. Both Maddie and Jackson had an awesome time, and I highly recommend it to anyone that’s visiting. They also had a little splash park that the kids could run in, which was fantastic after they were all sweaty from the heat. A great way to cool down! The kids picked out their toy from the gift shop – Jackson got 2 stuffed alligators and Maddie got one. Jackson named his Alligator and Chompy. He then named Maddie’s Swingy Taylor because (Swingy) its tail is all swingy, and (Taylor) it has a long tail. After the gift shop, it was off to Target to pick up a few more groceries and pick up Jackson’s birthday cake for tomorrow.

We were supposed to go to the mini-golf tournament at the resort tonight, but it’s too rainy outside so we decided to go for a drive instead and then watch a movie in the room. So far we haven’t gotten any calls from the desk telling us that Maddie’s too loud, so hopefully it will stay that way. We just said a prayer that she’ll finally be able to sleep tonight!! I don’t know why she has such a horrible attitude 24/7, and how she can survive on 2 hours of sleep a night while screaming the remainder of the time. God help us!!

After 45 minutes of Maddie screaming, the words 'uckie poopoo' are voiced and I go change the biggest gooiest diaper ever. Back to bed! Mike turns on “The Bee Movie” on the floor, making her lay down to watch it. But it’s too loud and she keeps waking up during the loud parts. So Mike goes on a covert mission to turn off the movie without her seeing, otherwise she'll start screaming again!!

Vacation Day #4

It is 3:00 am. All is not well in the Wald Family Hotel room. It has been 5 hours since my last blog, and yet the screaming continues. It is now time to get up and ready for our flight.

Although the ride to the airport was a little rough, it was nice to be able to board the plane early since we had little kids with us. Maddie was a scream monster during our wait (still screaming from the night before), and I was counting down the seconds before we could get on the plane. Then I realized that I’m terrified of flying, and my stomach started to turn. “Now seating those people that might have troubles getting up the aisle.” Does disgruntled mom with insane fear of flying that will most likely claw her way up the aisle to safety count as ‘having troubles?’ Either way, it was our turn to board. The transition of getting the kids on the plane was surprisingly easy, and the airplane stroller carseat combo I bought for Maddie proved to be absolutely priceless. And although I forgot my ‘get on the plane’ ritual, Mike remembered it for me! We started off with Jackson and me sitting in front with Mike and Maddie behind us – then Mike and I switched seats half way through the flight when Maddie started to fuss. Nothing a little “321 Penguins” couldn’t fix! Although, I’ll admit we were a little bummed that they don’t make hot chocolate chip cookies on flights earlier than 10:00am.

Off to the baggage claim! Jackson had an awesome time on the tram to get to the baggage claim, and Maddie finally decided that it’s not so cool to scream 24/7 and started to enjoy herself. Claiming our baggage was surprisingly easy – Mike and Jackson grabbed the bags, while Maddie and I waited with our luggage cart. We pushed our bags out to where we needed to wait for our rental car van pick up, and…..we waited. And waited. And then my back started to sweat in the sweltering heat, and we waited some more. Finally it came!! After our luggage and children got thrown into the van (literally!!), I was very grateful for another mom that helped our kids buckle up before the insane bus driver took off like a madman. However, if I knew what awaited us at the end of the bus drive, I would have begged to remain on the bus of insanity....

Advantage Car Rental – Where the only “advantage” is having the experience of what it feels like to be shoved through customs, in 100 degree weather, starving, being herd like cattle, a slave to needing a car, and in line with 400 other people that will do anything to get one - just like your own desperate self. We throw our luggage into a pile with the rest of the tired and angry waiting families, while Mike gets in line. The kids and I break out the DVD player and start watching movies with a few other kids sitting next to us. I don’t think they spoke English, but I’m sure they liked watching Shrek anyway.

Finally, a car!! I think Mike asked for the only car they had that resembled a banana. And boy, did they provide! So we all pile into the banana on wheels, and leave for the Welcome Center. We tested out my new navigation system on my laptop, which I thought would prove to be priceless. Instead, it proved to be the cause of more melt-downs than a fondue restaurant. After accidental toll road trips, many “reconfiguring directions” notices from the navigation system that now seemed to be mocking us – we finally got onto the right road and made it safely to the Welcome Center. Although, a bit ironic it was named “Welcome” center.

My reservations were for the Polynesian Isles, which we were looking forward to staying at and had good reviews from people I’ve talked to that have stayed there. What’s this? Now you say we need to stay at Cypress Pointe? The exact resort that someone had warned me about earlier as to how un-kid-friendly it was. So I show them my papers that say I made reservations and paid for a visit at Poly, and told them that I want to stay there. After talking with the girl at the Welcome Center and the travel agent on the phone, they both said that they were unable to let us stay there because we didn’t make reservations in enough advance – even though we made them in February and had a printed record of it. So we just went to CP.

The room looks a lot smaller than the one we would have stayed at, and also appears to be set up a little odd – such as being able to look directly into the GLASS SHOWER from the front door, since there is an open bathroom, and a giant plate glass window separating the kitchen, bedroom, and bathroom. Nice!! We went swimming down at the pool, where Maddie took a face dive into the water right when we got there. We then played on the playground for a while before heading back to the room for baths, and bedtime. Maddie officially passed out at 5:30pm so we scooted her crib into the … well, I guess you’d call it “bathroom” area while we watch a movie and have some snacks before bed.

Vacation Day #3

Today started with once again another game of Guess Who. You can never play too many games of Guess Who!! Mike and I went to Target to pick up some stuff, then came back and we all watched The Wizard Of Oz. Jackson loved it!! I fell asleep half way through, and woke up at the end when Jackson started cheering. Later in the afternoon, we went to The Great Mall Of The Great Plains in Olathe. I think the word "great" was overly used for this mall, as apparently nothing within 100 feet of the mall remotely resembles anything great. Although I did find a couple great deals at The Children's Place. It looked like half the stores were rented out by churches and youth groups, all of which were empty. Even Jesus abandoned this mall.

Time to go to the hotel! When we were leaving Grandma Katie and Papa Jeff's house to go to the hotel closer to the airport, Jackson started crying because he thought we'd never see them again and said he already misses them. So he had to run back to the door for an extra hug goodbye, and a million waves from the car. He still cried the whole way to the hotel, and had to call them the second we got here.

Maddie's jumping in her pack-and-play, Mike and Jackson's watching the Cardinals, and I'm getting ready for bed. Alarm clock set for 3:45 am. Good times!

Vacation Day #2

Today started with the sound of Maddie screaming from the next room and a migraine headache. After some Ibuprofen and caffeine, it was off to Deana Rose Children's Homestead - a petting zoo and play park for kids and families. Although it was a lot hotter than we are used to, we all had a good time. Our visit began with a "No Guns" sign posted on the door, which I really didn't think that was a problem in OP Kansas. Apparently I was wrong! (Don't worry, I checked my glock at the door)

Off to the goats! Jackson loved them. Maddie loved them from a distance, but was afraid of pretty much anything up close. There was a giant red slide that kids could climb up and go down coming out of the side of a barn. There were a lot of kids running around Jackson's age wearing blue shirts, so I think half of my pictures are of random kids that I thought were Jackson. I'll photo-shop these memories into our visit!

Jackson On The Slide

Random Blue Shirt Kid I Thought Was Jackson

Off to the cows! Jackson got his picture taken in a wooden cut-out, letting us all know that he wants to be a dairy farmer when he grows up. He also got to milk a fake cow, and sprayed the milk all over his shirt. Then Mike pretended to drink it straight from the cow. Classy, I know.

To the playground! Although Jackson loved the play equipment, Maddie was (once again) afraid of everything. Screamed in the stroller, screamed while being held, screamed while running away from everyone... It was at least nice there was a semi-cool breeze to cool our sweaty backs!

When we got back home, Mike and I had a "Guess Who" tournament with the doubler-rule where each person has two character cards instead of one. After I smoked that competition, I thought I'd up the ante and try a triple-card-game. And of course, my winning streak prevailed! "Does your person that's not a girl, that has glasses, that isn't wearing a hat, that has a nose the size of a hippo - yah, that one - does that person look like a serial killer?"

Grandpa Jeff and Grandma Katie made a fantastic dinner that both of the kids ate. I'm surprised that Jackson tried the salmon, and that he also really liked it! He's a super picky eater and hates to try new foods. Maddie of course loved everything, and devoured her corn on the cob. (Although I'm a bit worried about another 'corn' incident, especially on the plane...) After bath time, Jackson tried putting on his own pajamas, only he put his head through the front button holes instead of the neck hole. Hilarious.

After the kids were in bed, we stayed up to play Cranium. The best clue was when Mike acted out what I thought was a long-armed dinosaur -- until he made the "no, not LONG arms..." sign, which then I assumed he meant short-armed. T-REX!! Ummmm, and the answer was rollercoaster? OK, so maybe I'm not the best guesser in the world.

Vacation Day #1

Today, we woke up around 8:00 am and finished packing for our trip. We finally left the house around 10:00 am to head to Kansas City. Whoops! Jill forgot her neck pillow. Back to the house. OK, now we're on our way! Whoops! Mike forgot his wedding ring and Dr Pepper hat - yes, both extremely important items in the Wald family! OK, now we're finally on our way!

It's now 12:00. Hop on the interstate.....and take the very next exit to stop for lunch. Yes, we made it far! We went to Burger King and the kids got the new Apple Fries, which they both loved! Crowns in tow, we're now off again!

Time for gameboy! Jackson loves to play gameboy while traveling, and it keeps the backseat quiet for a while, so I'm all for it. However, he needs to change games every 5 minutes which gets a little annoying. So Mike and I deem it "Official Quiet Time" in the car and time to put gameboy away since it's causing game-changing controversy. What's that? A Burger King crown flying from the back seat into Mike's face while he's driving. So we take the next exit so I can have a 'talk' with Jackson. We get back into the car and we're off again! This time with Maddie awake from the commotion.

We get into Kansas City around 4:00 pm at Grandma and Grandpa Wald's house. The kids are super wild from being trapped in the car all day, and only want to run and be wild. So what better place to go, but the "wild" of The Rainforest Cafe? What a great idea! The kids absolutely love it there, and Jackson's super excited to see all the animals. Until the thunderstorm and elephant stampede. Maddie freaks out, and screams the rest of the time there. Apparently it scared the 'corn' out of her *ahem* as she leaks a gooey diaper all over Grandma Katie's hand.

When we get back home, Maddie goes straight to bed while everyone else stays up for Jackson's birthday cake that Grandma Katie made - delicious! Of course, Jackson wanted to eat about 19 pieces of cake.

After Jackson goes to bed, the adults stay up to play our new favorite card game Quiddler. During the game, we all hear a KABOOM that sounded like a shot gun (according Katie and me), fireworks (according to Jeff), or a bomb (according to Mike). Although if it were a bomb, I'd think there would have been fire. And when we asked what direction it came from, we each pointed in a different direction. So we're quite possibly all deaf! Or just really tired.

Off to bed, to get ready for another fun-filled day.
