Jackson's Daddy Date

This was the first weekend of summer break. Jill signed up Jackson for the Ankeny Park's and Rec kid's fishing derby. Jill and I used to fish a lot when we lived in Aberdeen, SD. Many of my co-workers and friends liked to fish and would take us on their boats. I think Jackson even went with us when we was really little. Since we moved to Iowa about 6 years ago we really have not fished very much at all, so it was fun to get out the tackle box and fishing poles again.

It was at a little pond at a park in Ankeny. After signing up they gave us free night crawlers and bottled water and said listen for your name for prizes. Jackson won right away and was so excited to win his own new tackle box. Fishing was not going very well for us though, we watched the people next to us reel in little fish and even crabs and turtles and we got nothing, besides sticks and moss as shown in our pictures. A few times it felt like we got nibbles and our worms were half eaten, and we lost some tackle and hooks when it seemed to snag on something on the bottom of the lake.

Finally the guy next to us (who was catching lots of fish, and crabs and turtles.) let Jackson reel in a tiny fish. Right after that we caught one on our pole too. The pictures are deceiving, the fish we caught were REALLY tiny and had to be thrown back. Jackson was upset because he wanted to keep the fish and bring them home as pets.

Jill also went back to work for the first time since we came home from Ethiopia today and Jackson and I got a bit sidetracked with all the fun while fishing and made it home just in time for her to leave home and rush to work. The rest of the day Jill worked and I watched all 3 kids. It was a lot of work and made me appreciate everything Jill has been doing since we got back from Ethiopia while I'm at work.
